Week in Review [7/27 – 8/3]

Another fun week of running…

This week’s highlights:

1.)  I ran my easy run on Wednesday at a pace that actually felt easy! My easy runs do not have specific pace criteria, instead, I aim to: feel like I could run forever, be able to speak in full sentences without gasping for breath, and stop and take pictures of fun things I see.

Monday it rained. I did not run. I’m not hard core or beast mode or whatever we’re calling it these days.

2.) I did speed work on my birthday, and as a present to me, Jeff ran with me! It was tough – turns out 1200m repeats are hard. After the second one, we walked the recovery intervals, and that helped us stick with it for all 6 intervals. Later, I noticed that the second interval was our fastest…no wonder that one felt particularly difficult.

Which one of these is intervals? Just Kidding, intervals don’t come all wrapped up!

3.) My definition of cross training: any physical activity or combination of activities that is not running and lasts for at least 30 minutes. I’m getting better at it! I kayaked, and continued on with Kinetic Revolution. I also added some Wii Fit in there. No, it’s not terribly intense, but it’s also not nothing…score!

We walked by the Hale House on Saturday. It’s really old (16??). Rev. Hale apparently was responsible for putting a stop to the witch hunting in Beverly. And that’s why all the crazies go to the next town over on Halloween. (Salem)

4.) I ran a 10k on Sunday. Recap – coming soon to a blog near you!

Ready to race!

How was your week last week?

Scavenger Hunt {2}

Last week, I decided to start doing some scavenger hunts on my easy runs (check out this post, if you need more background info). I thought it sounded like a lot of fun, and I was really hoping it would help me go easier on my easy runs. It’s only been one week, but so far…success on both fronts!

My list of 5 items included:

A Shovel

2014-07-30 07.08.01

That yellow thing under the steps is the shovel….I promise.

A Green Lawn

2014-07-30 07.02.46

No shortage of these this time of year.

An Out-of-Season Decoration

Its a little glare-y, but icicle lights! Also, this pizza place is under new management and I’m excited to try it.

A Pond

2014-08-01 08.15.56

It’s called Shoe Pond, in case you were wondering.

A Bench

2014-07-30 06.47.30

Multiple benches because I am an over-achiever.

I think I did pretty good. The Shovel and Out-of-Season Decoration were the two tricky ones, but neither managed to allude me! The pond is one I regularly run by on my long runs, so I didn’t even have to alter my running routes to see it.

I had a good time on the hunt, so I’m doing it again this week. This time, the random number generator selected numbers: 29, 70, 39, 51, & 20 from my master list, leaving us to find:

HuntList2I’m not really sure how I’m going to get a picture of #4. If I spot a pair of these, I imagine they will be moving along too quickly to snap a photo. Perhaps I need to get my own orange running shoes?

Feel free to join in the hunt! (the “rules”)

If you joined in last week, how did you do on your Scavenger Hunt?

The Friday 5 {13th Edition}

Let’s just jump right in, shall we:

1) I got a new Garmin for my birthday! Isn’t she awesome? I named her Hermione. I’ve been reading Harry Potter out loud and so the name was in my head, but I also looked up the meaning of the name and found it’s the female version of Hermes who is the Greek god associated with speed. So, I think it’s a good name for a Garmin.

It was VERY difficult for me to take a picture of my watch while on my wrist. Any one else have this problem?

2) I did my long run today! I’ve been looking forward to my long run ALL week long, but I so so so did NOT want to go this morning. It took me an hour and a half to finally get my lazy bum out the door at 7:30 AM, and then it took around 8 miles for me to really get into it. Eventually everything worked itself out and I had a good time, but man was it rough getting out the door. (Side note: even though I wasn’t really feeling it, I was definitely grateful that I have the chance to do a long run on a week day.)

3) “It’s Raining Tacos…” This is possibly one of the weirdest songs I’ve ever heard, but it’s so catchy! And, I LOVE tacos. I like mine soft shell with guacamole, beans, cheese, and frank’s redhot (in that order).

4) I had the best (non-traditional) grilled cheese ever last night. It went directly into my mouth without any photographing for the blog, but it didn’t really look particularly special anyways. It was the TASTE that was phenomenal: Cheddar & Brie w/ pear on Texas Toast. So good.  (If you happen to be near Brookline, MA: http://www.hopsnscotchbar.com/).  The grilled cheese, along w/ a drink or two w/ friends, and a late bed time probably contributed to how much I did not want to run this morning, but it was worth it.

5) The Garage is DONE! They started building this thing in February 2013 – right next door to my house. I mentioned it once before in a Friday 5, so it seemed fitting that I’d give you an update.  They are finally, finally done. Which means…no more construction noise! You adjust to it, you really do, but on Saturday morning (starting as early as 6 AM), it’s hard to handle. I suppose it always ensured that I would get out for my long run nice and early, but I’m so looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow! I went over to the opening ceremony, where I got to see the Governor of Massachusetts cut the ribbon for the “mobility center”. (Yep, apparently “parking garage” is not a fancy enough term.)

2014-08-01 13.31.20

Yes, the GOVERNOR came to cut a ribbon for a garage. Slow Friday?

Happy Friday, friends!

Do you like tacos? What do you put on them?  Did you know that GoveRnor has an R there? I didn’t.
