Its the MOST wonderful time of the year: Scavenger Hunt Recap

This past week has gone so fast! Jeff and I spent Christmas in Buffalo with my family, and although there was no snow (in Buffalo! for Christmas! Can you imagine?) it was still pretty easy to get in the Christmas spirit. I’d been ramping up all week with the Christmas Scavenger Hunt, and spending several days with family brought it all together. I didn’t get a ton of miles in (one per day to be exact, just to keep the holiday streak alive), but I did get some “cross training” at our annual family bowling competition. Unfortunately, I was unable to defend my title, and the Rudolph Cup has a new home for 2015.

2014-12-26 16.58.10Handing the trophy off to the new champ!

Now, speaking of the scavenger hunt, I said I was giving myself through the New Year to find everything on the list, but I feel like I’ve had enough time, so I’m calling it. Feel free to keep searching, if you’ve decided to play along!

I was looking for 8 items (some holiday in nature, and some tricky ones to keep me on my toes.) And here’s how I did:

2014-12-24 16.38.20So lame. But, it’s still snow.

2014-12-22 18.57.53

2014-12-24 16.41.12Santa in his RV. Yeah, I don’t know either.

2014-12-24 16.35.10

2014-12-22 18.51.53So Awesome.

2014-12-24 16.33.46Someone forgot to peel the witch off their tree!

2014-12-24 16.44.40Yeah, that’s me, big ol’ cheater.

I did not find a runner wearing red or green. I didn’t actually see another runner at all. I’m sure they were there, but I mostly only ran a single mile at a time, so that didn’t give me much time to see anyone else. I could have worn red or green myself, but I thought I should probably only count myself for one item. 🙂

All in all, not too bad. Getting back to scavenger hunting was pretty fun, too.

Did you have a good holiday? Find any items on the Scavenger Hunt List?

It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas!

If you’ve been running outside lately, I’m sure you’ve noticed that “It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas!” But just in case you haven’t noticed, it’s time to get your eyes off your running watch, and start looking around! Because Kristen from Run Away With Me and I are sponsoring (aka: we made up) a Holiday Running Scavenger Hunt!!!  (Try to contain your excitement.)

Since we both had a blast creating and participating in Running Scavenger Hunts this summer/fall, and are huge fans of the Christmas Season we joined up to bring you the VERY MERRIEST RUNNING SCAVENGER HUNT LIST!

Kristen and I will both be searching for these 8 items on our runs this week, and we’d love for you all to join us. So, bundle yourself up in multiple layers, hats, and mittens, and strap on your studded running shoes, and head out the door! (Unless you live in a warm climate…in which case, you can spend much less time gearing up.)

Feel free to let us know what you’ve found in the comments section of this post (or her corresponding post), OR create your very own post to show off pictures of what you’ve found.  I’m giving myself through New Year’s day to find these items, and then I’ll post my results.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hunting!

Alaskan Scavenger Hunt

If you’ve been reading my blog for a few months, you’ll know I did some Scavenger Hunt runs in the very recent past. I decided to take a break from that, but almost immediately after giving it up, I read this post by Kristen at Run Away With Me. In the post, she mentions how she hasn’t been able to do a Scavenger Hunt because living up in Alaska she doesn’t see the same things that have been on the typical Scavenger Hunt list (like a traffic light, for example). So, Kristen posted an Alaskan Scavenger Hunt List, and well, in the words of Barney Stinson…

challenge accepted

Kristen’s list was no easy feat for this New Englander. I think I did pretty well, but I’ll let you guys be the judge. (What do you think, Kristen? Did I rock it?) It included these 8 Alaskan items:

2014-09-20 07.58.43

Not a strong start. Plenty of hills on my run, but no mountains. I did find this bump, though.

The Ocean

2014-09-15 17.17.17

Easy Peasy…the ocean is everywhere around here. 🙂

A Moose

2014-09-20 07.29.32

#notarealmoose #cheating

2014-09-20 10.34.54

How much is that gold salmon in the window? Or cod? What does salmon look like anyways? I’ve only seen it cooked.

A Train

2014-09-20 09.10.40

Oh hey, I got another one without cheating!

A Glacier

2014-09-20 10.11.33

Kristen, have you licked a glacier? Does it taste like Gatorade?

An Eagle

2014-09-20 07.18.35

Eagles are EVERYWHERE. In addition to this plastic dealy, I saw four stone eagles, countless bumper stickers, and its the USPS logo, so every mailbox and mail truck…tons of eagles.

2014-09-20 06.58.07

Another easy one for New England, ending on a good note.

If nothing else, I’m pretty sure I get an A for effort! 🙂 It was quite fun trying to find these; it definitely got the creative juices flowing. Thanks for the great list Kristen!

Did anyone else try Kristen’s Alaskan Scavenger Hunt? What does a Salmon look like? If I didn’t admit it, would have have believed my moose?

So long, Scavenger Hunt…for now

I’m finally getting my photos up from my last scavenger hunt! I haven’t been hunting continuously for two and a half weeks, I just got a little lazy about posting the final photos.

Before you check out my results, I have a confession to make. When I created this final list, I cheated a little. I decided to throw out one of the items that was randomly chosen and pick again. The item was a Santa Hat, and it was replaced by Disney Lawn Ornament. My reasoning was that we’d already had “Christmas Lights” and “Out of Season Decoration” and I wanted something easier and “new” to find.

I was wrong; by doing that, I’m convinced that I jinxed myself!

I had a tough time finding a bunch of these items, especially the Disney Lawn Ornament, and you can tell that from my pictures. I did however, within the first half mile of my Scavenger Hunt Run, run by a Santa Hat. Argh! I then ran by the same Santa Hat three more times throughout the week. (Someone had put a box of junk to the curb and a Santa Hat was sitting right on top!). I feel like the universe was laughing at me.

Here’s what I did find:

A Disney Lawn Ornament

Half points? A quarter?

When I spotted Olive Oyl, I was 98% sure that Popeye was not a Disney owned cartoon. I thought that it could be possible, since Disney owns a lot of things (including the Muppets), but I really didn’t think I’d found a Disney character. Since then, I did a quick internet search and found that while Disney doesn’t own Popeye, they did produce the live action Popeye movie with Robin Williams in 1980. So, with all those qualifications…..this counts, right?

A Running Trail

2014-08-30 07.42.24

This is a walking path, but is the closest I could get. It feels “trail-like” to me, and I run on it, so I snapped a picture.

A Water Bottle

2014-08-30 07.15.18

Could not believe how many crushed water, soda, gatorade bottles are left on the side of the road.

A Curvy Slide

2014-08-25 08.31.47

This is barely a curvy slide. I saw at least 4 of these, where did all the really curvy slides go?

Neon Clothing

2014-08-30 07.00.38

One day I decided to wear calf sleeves on my long run. I had a good run (probably unrelated) and now I must wear them for every long run.

And there you have it, the end of this series of Scavenger Hunts. I had a good time doing them, but I didn’t want it to start feeling like an obligation. I still have my master list and will probably “host” more hunts in the future. I just need a little break, so things don’t get stale.

I’m glad some of you played along! I enjoyed seeing everyone’s interpretations of the lists, and I hope you had fun while doing it.

Scavenger Hunt {5}

I just finished my long run and wrapped up scavenger hunting for the week. The run went fantastic! But my brain is almost as tired as my legs, so let’s get on with it before I type something ridiculous.

Last Week’s 5 items included:

A Red Car & A Bumper Sticker

Two birds, one stone!

A Mile Marker

I forgot I needed a mile marker until about 5 miles into my long run. Luckily, I knew where I could find some, and I had plenty of time to get over there. It was fun to change up my route a little, I hadn’t been over in that area for a while, and I got to skip running over the bridge for the day!

Mile 2.8 @ mile 11.

A Sundial or Outdoor Clock

2014-08-19 17.01.26

Christmas Lights

2014-07-30 07.20.53

Yes, I used this before, but I ran by it 3 more times this week so I think it counts. Go ahead, call me a cheater…

I think this coming week might be the last round of Scavenger Hunting. 5 sounds like a good number to end on, and I don’t want it to get old, you know? We’ll see. For this week, the random number generator selected numbers: 60, 88, 83, 4, & 130 from my master list. So, we’ll be looking for:

I’m glad some of you have been playing along! It’s been fun checking out what everyone else has found. If you haven’t been scavenger hunting, feel free to join in the hunt!

If you joined in last week, how did you do on your Scavenger Hunt?

Scavenger Hunt {4}

Third week of scavenger hunting went well. I saw most of my items within the firs half mile, and had a lot of options of what to snap pictures of. And then there was the horse…good thing I live near some weirdo who…well, you’ll see. 🙂

My list of 5 items included:

An American Flag

A Traffic Light

Something Pink

I”m reading a book {it”s fiction} that said new england houses are “dismal”…tell that to this purple house w/ pink flamingos!

A Horse

Yes, I do live in Medieval Europe.

A Fire Hydrant

I’m totally into this for my easy runs, so here we go for round 4! The random number generator selected numbers: 14, 97, 120, 61, & 39 from my master list. So, we’ll be looking for:

I’m glad some of you have been playing along! It’s been fun checking out what everyone else has found. If you haven’t been scavenger hunting, feel free to join in the hunt!

If you joined in last week, how did you do on your Scavenger Hunt?

Scavenger Hunt {3}

Second scavenger hunt! I had fun again, and the search entertained me on my (slow) easy run.

My list of 5 items included:

A car in disrepair

A rose bush

Guess who doesn”t know for sure what a rose bush looks like! Hint: it”s me

A ladder

2014-08-06 07.11.37

I can no longer use an apostrophe in photo captions….or parentheses. Any one else have this problem? I will now be using a ” as an apostrophe. FYI.

2014-08-06 06.39.17

Do beach runners run with shoes on or off? Do they get sand in them? I would get sand in them. I would hate that. I”d rather just look at the sand. [notice the ” in place of an apostrophe…also no parentheses]

A pair of orange running shoes

Totally saw these, but couldn’t get a photo, (OMG the apostrophe and parentheses started working!!) so I recreated them with this fancy paint picture.

As long as I’m enjoying myself, I’ll keep this up. This time, the random number generator selected numbers: 21, 90, 10, 89, & 17 from my master list. Actually, the random number generator picked 3 numbers we’ve already had, so I re-picked those…crazy, right? But, anyways, we’ll be looking for:

I thought it would be pretty easy, until…HORSE. Where am I going to see a horse? (Really, where?)

Feel free to join in the hunt! (the “rules”)

If you joined in last week, how did you do on your Scavenger Hunt? Where can I find a horse?

Scavenger Hunt {2}

Last week, I decided to start doing some scavenger hunts on my easy runs (check out this post, if you need more background info). I thought it sounded like a lot of fun, and I was really hoping it would help me go easier on my easy runs. It’s only been one week, but so far…success on both fronts!

My list of 5 items included:

A Shovel

2014-07-30 07.08.01

That yellow thing under the steps is the shovel….I promise.

A Green Lawn

2014-07-30 07.02.46

No shortage of these this time of year.

An Out-of-Season Decoration

Its a little glare-y, but icicle lights! Also, this pizza place is under new management and I’m excited to try it.

A Pond

2014-08-01 08.15.56

It’s called Shoe Pond, in case you were wondering.

A Bench

2014-07-30 06.47.30

Multiple benches because I am an over-achiever.

I think I did pretty good. The Shovel and Out-of-Season Decoration were the two tricky ones, but neither managed to allude me! The pond is one I regularly run by on my long runs, so I didn’t even have to alter my running routes to see it.

I had a good time on the hunt, so I’m doing it again this week. This time, the random number generator selected numbers: 29, 70, 39, 51, & 20 from my master list, leaving us to find:

HuntList2I’m not really sure how I’m going to get a picture of #4. If I spot a pair of these, I imagine they will be moving along too quickly to snap a photo. Perhaps I need to get my own orange running shoes?

Feel free to join in the hunt! (the “rules”)

If you joined in last week, how did you do on your Scavenger Hunt?

Scavenger Hunt!

I recently read a post on a (new to me) running blog about a running photo scavenger hunt. I immediately thought it sounded like tons of fun and wanted to do my own! Originally, I was going to create my own hunt list, but as I started to do so I found that I was picking things that I knew I’d be able to find (ahem, that’s cheating).

Instead, I compiled a master list from a number of sources:

  • Fairytales & Fitness: This blog created the list from the post I read. I’m now following their blog, because it sounds like fun!
  • Runner Girls Podcast:  They did several scavenger hunts along w/ their 3rd season of their show. I haven’t listened to their podcast (I’m not in a podcast groove right now), but it sounds pretty good from their website.
  • Pintrest: As you may have guessed, there are a bajillion lists for scavenger hunts on pintrest.

I don’t really know how much structure this game is going to have, but to start, I randomly chose 5 items from the master list and am giving myself one week of running to find them. I also made up some other rules because that is how I roll.  If you’d like to join in the fun, find some things, and share some pictures of what you find, I’d love it!

I really only insist on number 5. If you want to drop your phone all over the place, it’s totally your decision. 🙂 (please ignore my spelling errors)

I think I might create some kind of points system, but no need to get too complicated right from the start. And, now, with no further ado, here’s what we will be hunting for this week. The random number generator selected numbers: 114, 3, 23, 71, & 1 from my master list. :

HuntList1Good luck on your hunt! Have fun! And let me know if you’re playing along!
